ABOUT THE SONGS
Songs That Jesus Taught Me
Virtually all the songs comprising Songs That Jesus Taught Me were written (both music and lyrics) while I rode the subway between Brooklyn
and Manhattan during the summer of 2003. The following are my personal thoughts regarding these Christian songs.
"Gentle Jesus" - is a ballad and song of praise, originally composed on electric bass.
"Tomorrow Is Another Day" - It is difficult indeed not to give in to despair given the disappointments, drudgery and ill-intentioned
deeds of others which we experience daily. But with the help of God we may begin each tomorrow afresh.
"What Would Jesus Do" - This love song is one of my personal favorites of the collection.
"Jesus, Healer of All Hearts" - was written following the painful break-up of a personal relationship.
"Let Jesus In" - is dedicated to my teacher and friend Rev. Richard Lewkiewicz, who oversaw my Christian studies.
"Three As One" - is a song of worship to the Holy Trinity.
"My Father's Will" - I was surprised at the relatively few hymns focusing on the Crucifixion (as opposed to the Resurrection) - this
is my response. The piece is musically very different from the other songs comprising STJTM, and its emotional intensity
still surprises me.
"Jesus Christ Is Risen" - Just as day must follow night, so does the Resurrection follow the Crucifixion.
"I Shall Follow You" - We follow God along a path where we know not what lies ahead - good or bad - and must trust in His mercy and
continual presence to help us overcome the struggles we will encounter along the way.
"Call To Apostles" - Each Christian is an apostle who, through baptism and confirmation, is given the responsibility to bear
witness to the teachings of the Gospel.
"Child Of God" - We each have been mistreated at one time or another - by friends, colleagues, family or lovers. The Lord,
however, is here for us.
"Birth Of My Savior" - There can never be too many Christmas songs, as long as we remember that Christmas is not about "Rudolph"
or "Frosty."
"When I Go Home To The Lord" - After we have (hopefully) fulfilled our task on earth, we return from where we came: "Men forget:
their origin is not the womb." (from "Gentle Jesus").
"Jesus, My Savior, Makes The Clouds Go Away" - is a cheerful song which can make the most miserable day bright. (I have sung this
song to myself on more than a few occasions!)
"With This Ring" - is the final of the fifteen STJTM songs to have been composed and the last to appear in the recording.
Another of my personal favorites, and an appropriately forward-looking close to the collection.
